Adam's Climate Change Debate

Scientists have observed rises in average temperatures since the late 19th century. Scientists call this rise in temperature global warming.

Scientists have created climate models that predict a significant rise in temperatures.

Scientists believe carbon dioxide released by humans is causing global warming in the Earths atmosphere and oceans and that climate change is causing the polar icecaps to melt and sea levels to rise.

Critics such as myself dispute the credibility of climate scientists and reject that humans are the main cause of global warming and that temperatures will continue to rise.

Carbon dioxide most definitely increases global temperature. This is well accepted. But carbon dioxide has a diminishing returns kind of effect. If Carbon dioxide were doubled, and just its effects were measured, temperatures would rise less than 1 degree Celsius. The models that suggest 3-5 degrees Celsius temperature rise do so assuming warming is a positive feedback, meaning, that if carbon dioxide causes the globe to warm, things like water vapor will make it warm much more.

But if there is neutral or a negative feedback doubling carbon dioxide will continue to make the temperature rise slightly, but the lack of positive feedbacks will mean the end result is much easier to manage and there is little to be worried about.

In November 2009 and November 2011 e-mails of climate scientists were hacked and released online which revealed disagreement among scientists over climate models.

Recent scientific research shows that global warming in the atmosphere has slowed but has increased in the oceans due to carbon dioxide which is also causing Ocean acidification.

Climate anomalies related to each other from large distances is called teleconnection. An example of teleconnection is the warm oceanic phase El Niño and the cool oceanic phase La Niña.

By this definition, we are still in the ice age that began 2.6 million years ago at the start of the Pleistocene epoch, because the Greenland, Arctic, and Antarctic ice sheets still exist.

Within the ice ages (or at least within the current one), more temperate and more severe periods occur. The colder periods are called glacial periods, the warmer periods interglacials, such as the Eemian Stage.

The Earth is currently in the Holocene epoch interglacial.

Ice core records show that before the Holocene there was global warming after the end of the last ice age and cooling periods, but climate changes became more regional at the start of the Younger Dryas. During the transition from last glacial to holocene, the Huelmo/Mascardi Cold Reversal in the Southern Hemisphere began before the Younger Dryas, and the maximum warmth flowed south to north from 11,000 to 7,000 years ago. It appears that this was influenced by the residual glacial ice remaining in the Northern Hemisphere until the later date.

Glacial events are caused by what is called Milankovitch cycles which are orbital movements that effect the Earths climate.

I think more research needs to be done into how carbon dioxide affects the Earths atmosphere and oceans and what impact it has on the climate.

Adam's Evangelion Fanfiction

The sun was rising over Tokyo-3. Rei Ayanami woke up and began her morning routine of getting ready for school.

"Ayanami? Can I come in?" A familiar voice inquired.

She walked towards the entrance to her apartment and slowly opened the door.

Shinji Ikari was standing at door. Rei felt the soft touch of material on her body - the blue-haired girl instantly recognised it as the towel from earlier.

"Ayanami!" The boy wrapped it around her pale body carefully, keeping his eyes on the wall next to him as he did so. "You can't just answer the door naked!"

'Naked...I'm...naked?!' Quickly facing down and scanning herself, Rei ascertained that it was indeed so. She hastily retreated to the bathroom, where Rei promptly got dressed for school.

"Is this better?"

"Are you.. feeling okay, Ayanami?"

"I have sustained no injuries recently." Looking down on herself once again, as if scanning her body for any harm, she answered.

"Ikari, why are you here?" In her usual tone of voice.

"I...um...well, you see...Misato thought it would be good if I walked you to school in the morning."

"Are those my orders?"

"Yes Ayanami."

Shinji was not sure, but he could have sworn he saw Rei give a tiny, almost unnoticeable smile.

"Hey, Ayanami, wait!"

Rei was already walking out the apartment door and down the stairs, carrying her book bag.

Shinji had to keep a slow jog to catch up, but eventually did when they reached the bottom, and Rei stopped.

"What is it Ayanami?" Shinji spoke nervously.

"It is...nothing." Rei whispered, her voice trailing as she turned to continue walking.

"Why are you...blushing, Ikari?"

"Its...just a heat stroke...it's nothing, let's continue."

Rei wanted to ask why he was lying, her mouth opened...but the words didn't come.

They walked in silence the entire way to school staring at the ground, only Shinji giving the occasional glance at Rei and finding her staring down.

They arrive at school without incident, and take their seats.

Shinji sits down the front of the class, and Rei's seat was near the back corner, against the window.

The teacher arrived, and began to call the role.

"Rei?"

"Here, sir."

Shinji blushed a little.

He knew he had feelings for Rei, but could not help but blush.

Is this what love feels like?

"Shinji?"

When could he tell Rei how he felt?

"Shinji, you dummkopf!" Yelled Asuka.

"Ah, here sir! Sorry." Said Shinji.

He turned to glare at Asuka, and caught a quick glance at Rei.

She was staring out the window, as usual.

"Hey, Shinji, stop glaring at Ayanami and pay attention, will ya!" Shouted Touji.

The whole class erupted with laughter, and caused Shinji to go bright red.

Before he turned away, he could see slight tinges of pink on Rei's cheeks, made of pale white skin, but she continued to stare outside.

Shinji was relieved when the final bell rang, and he was able to leave, but not before waiting for Rei.

Rei continued to sit and stare out the window, apparently also waiting for everyone to leave.

Shinji mustered up enough courage to approach Rei, but before he could open his mouth, Rei spoke first.

"Ikari."

"Yes Ayanami?"

"Could you...walk me home. I wish to speak with you."

"Of course Ayanami" Said a surprised Shinji.

Rei got up silently and picked up her book bag, then made her way to the door. Shinji followed, and they left the school together.

"Ayanami, what is it you wish to talk about?"

"I wish to be alone to speak with you. When we arrive at my apartment, I will explain."

They were close enough to see Rei's building now, and Rei seemed to increase pace.

After hurrying up the four flights of stairs to her apartment, Rei edged open the always unlocked door, and stepped inside.

"Please Ikari, sit." Muttered Rei, waving her hand to the bed.

"Ikari, I must talk to you about something"

"Anything Ayanami, please tell me".

"I...you...affect me differently than the others. I do not know this feeling I have..."

"Whenever I speak to you, I feel...happy. I think. I'm not sure what happy is. I get a strange feeling in my stomach whenever your around me, whenever you...smile"

"When I first met you, in Unit 01's cage, you looked...different. When the Angel broke through and NERV was shook, you came over and expressed concern for me. No-one except the Commander has ever expressed concern for me before. It felt...good.

"When we defeated the 5th Angel, you came down, and burnt your hands to get into my entry plug. Just like when the Commander got me out of my entry plug when Unit 00's activation test was a failure. Except, he did not express as much concern for me as you did. For the first time...I...smiled."

"Rei, I-"

"I am not finished yet Ikari. When you reached out and gave me your hand, the touch made me get this feeling inside. I have read that in similar cases this feeling is...love."

"I have that feeling whenever I am near you. I think...

That I love you Shinji."

"I do not want to force my feelings upon you Ikari, if you do not share them, you are free to leave".

'I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away…'

"Ayanami...I...I have always been afraid. Of everything. I have always run from everything good in my life, every opportunity. You are one of those things...but this time, I am not going to run away. I'm not going to leave you Rei. I have always been lonely, and I know that you have as well. What I'm really trying to say is..."

"I...I love you Rei."
